A week long gathering of global thinkers developing inclusiove solutions for a resilient community

SMARTlab and the global collective are proud to welcome you to SMARTlab PhD Writer's Retreat and Skelligs Resarch Summit Feb 24 - Mar 1st

SMARTlab Skelligs/Living Iveragh Writers Retreat

Cahersiveen Library and surrounding sites, 24 Feb. - 1 March 2023

SMARTlab has been partnering with Living Iveragh for over a decade, and together the practice-based research community located within SMARTlab Skelligs - with the amazing Dr Anita McKeown at the helm- has, in constant creative collaboration with the 'mother ship' at UCD, attracted three major projects valued at over 800,000 euros to the region. This includes an RRDF commitment d 200,000 to SMARTlab Skelligs and Living Iveragh in an RRDF contract to support renovation of the old Ballroom in Cahersiveen into a n RDI Centre of Excellence.

In addition, SMARTlab Skelligs has provided site-specific research supervision to three local community members on the PhD programme, thus allowing local research talent to stay local, building resilience and future employability in the community.

Living Iveragh has co-funded these researchers, and all three are now contributing in their own right as researchers on major European Commission and Science Foundation Ireland projects as well, from Vinny Hyland on the EU Horizon Bio-beo project (SMARTlab UCD) to Ellie Turner and Lucy Hunt on the SFI Discover project Muinin Catalyst.

Our return to the Iveragh Peninsula marks our celebration of these achievements and our chance to reflect and consider the next remarkable projects that this amazing region can support in its unique environment.

This is a Writers' Retreat, not a seminar or conference or summit. It is our chance to escape from schedules, meetings, committees, deadlines. . .and to breath, walk, return to the land, look out to sea, and refresh our minds. We will write and share our writing. And we will prepare to return to the university and our 'day jobs' globally, with a refocussed attention to bringing the ideas that matter into reality through our research.
